BOSTON, July 25, 2001 -- On Tuesday and
Wednesday, August 7th and 8th, the Berklee Performance Center will be
the place to be to hear and see exciting new, young talent. Both
concerts are free and open to the public. The Berklee Performance
Center, at 136 Massachusetts Avenue in Boston, is

Hosted
by J. Curtis Warner, Berklee's Director of Education and Community
Partnerships, Tuesday's SYSTEM-5 BLOW-OUT concert will feature Boston's
most talented inner-city youth in a concert showcasing students from a
cross-section of Boston public high schools.
Since 1991, "Berklee City Music"
has provided deserving Boston-area high school students with a music
education at no charge. This is accomplished both by the Summer Youth
Scholarship for Talent and Excellence in Music (SYSTEM-5) as well as an
after-school mentoring program. "City Music" began by offering a
handful of young musicians the chance to study at Berklee tuition-free.
Today, it is a year-round project that has provided scholarships and
mentoring opportunities to more than 200 young Boston musicians.
Tuesday
evening's free SYSTEM-5 BLOW-OUT concert, which begins at 7:30 pm, will
feature the traditional awarding of full-tuition SYSTEM-5 Continuing
Scholarships for full-time study at Berklee to three deserving students
who will have successfully completed Berklee's Five-Week Summer
Performance Program.
Wednesday
evening's free FIVE-WEEK BLOW-OUT concert, which begins at 8:15 pm,
winds up Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program with a concert
featuring some of the program's best ensembles, ranging from small
groups to big bands, as well as the Five-Week Choir. Musical styles
will include rock, jazz and fusion.
Founded
in 1945, Berklee College of Music has been advancing careers in
contemporary music for more than 50 years. The world's largest
independent college of music, Berklee has a multi-cultural enrollment
of more than 3,300 students, 35 percent of whom are international. The
college's alumni include some of the most respected figures in
contemporary music, including many multi-Grammy award winners.
